As the country continues "searching for answers," President Joe Biden announced that the full force of the federal government would be mobilized to investigate the Monterey Park shooting.
In a statement, he said that the shooting particularly affected the Asian-American and Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander communities because many of them were celebrating the Lunar New Year, which fell on Sunday, January 22, 2023.
About 60,000 people call Monterey Park home, and Asians make up 65% of the population.
While there is still a lot that the authorities don't know, President Biden stated that his thoughts and those of his wife Jill are with those who were killed and injured in the attack. Families are grieving or praying for their loved ones to recover from their injuries, he added.
California gunman is identified by police.
Huu Can Tran, 72, has been named as the suspected shooter who is suspected of killing ten people in the US, and police have confirmed that he killed himself after opening fire inside a white van that they had earlier surrounded.
There are no additional suspects, according to the police, and detectives are still looking into Tran's past, both personally and criminally. It is not yet known how many guns were used in the shooting, but they have so far seized a semi-automatic pistol and a handgun.
More research is required because it's possible that one of the found weapons is illegal to own in California. Seven of the ten victims of the shooting are still being treated in hospitals, according to the police.
The number of fatalities has been confirmed by the police at 10, but they believe Tran intended to kill more. The victims' ages are still unknown, but the majority seem to be older than 50.
