The Nkawkaw community in mourning bid a somber farewell to five young souls as the bodies of pupils from Ampeah Memorial School were laid to rest following a tragic motor accident on the Nkawkaw section of the Kumasi-Accra road. The heart-wrenching funeral ceremony, held at the Nkawkaw community durbar grounds on February 23, 2024, brought together grieving family members, friends, and the entire community to pay their last respects.
The poignant scene unfolded as the white coffins of the deceased, bearing their names and ages, served as a stark reminder of the precious lives lost. Among the departed were Archer Biney (4), Jerome Harmenu (7), Kwasi Nyarko Larry (12), Gafatsi Marcus (3), and Asare Joseph (8). Tears flowed freely as loved ones struggled to come to terms with the untimely demise of these innocent children.
The tragic accident occurred on February 15, 2024, when a Nissan Patrol vehicle, reportedly the official vehicle of the District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti region, collided with the Hyundai minibus transporting the schoolchildren home. Eyewitnesses recounted how the minibus driver attempted an unauthorized U-turn, leading to the fatal collision near Nanchia.
Despite the heroic efforts of first responders and medical personnel, four victims, including a female teacher identified as Dorcas Dede, succumbed to their injuries at the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw. Tragically, two more pupils lost their lives while undergoing treatment at the Koforidua hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to five.
The devastating accident has left the community reeling from shock and grief, underscoring the need for greater road safety measures and awareness. As families mourn the loss of their beloved children, the memory of these bright young souls will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew them, serving as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
